Despite the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, slaves in Galveston, Texas did not know about their freedom until June 19th, 1865, when federal soldiers arrived to enforce the decree. Juneteenth was made a federal holiday in 2021, 155 years after the first recorded Juneteenth celebrations. Join Brenna Wynn Greer PhD , award winning associate professor of history at Wellesley College, as she reviews the history and significance of Juneteenth as a holiday and a celebration.
