Our next "Come Bird @ My Hotspot" Bird Walk is at Osborne Mountain Overlook and will be led by Guy McGrane.
When?: Tuesday, April 29, 8:00AM - 10:30AM
Where?: Meet at 8AM at Osborne Mtn Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway, about a mile south of the 421 entrance near Deep Gap. The section of the Blue Ridge Parkway we will be walking is open, but there is little traffic due to the parkway being closed both North and South of this section.
If you prefer a shuttle to avoid the return walk, meet at the Hwy 421 entrance ramp for the Blue Ridge Parkway at 7:40 AM. We will shuttle you to Osborne Mtn Overlook, and the birdwalk will take you back to your cars.
What?: Ever wonder where all the fertile productive lands with great diversity have gone? One of the best remaining examples is the Deep Gap area of the parkway, the Mountains to Sea Trail (MST) and Ben Miller Road. This land has been spared the worst of the extractive uses, and
still has some deep rich organic soils perched atop natively fertile rocks. The result is a spectacular array of wildflowers, bugs, birds, and trees, with green and life aplenty.
Details: The walk is about a mile each way, so the round trip is 2 miles. If you want to only walk 1 mile, take advantage of the shuttle option, where you don't have to walk the return trip. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended.
