The Watauga Pioneers High School and Middle School mountain bike team will have an interest meeting for parents and students on Tuesday, November 4th, at 7:00 PM at Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences, 1179 State Farm Rd, Boone. We’ll cover important updates, answer questions, and introduce the coaching staff. Please bring a dessert to share. Preregistration is requested.
The mountain bike team program is open to students grades 5-12, including home schoolers, in Watauga County. The goal is to get more youth involved in the sport of mountain biking and to build personal mountain biking skills, physical fitness, and personal growth. Male and female student athletes at all skill levels, from beginner to advanced, learn mountain biking skills and build personal strength. During practices student athletes are divided into groups that are best suited for their ability level. The past Watauga County team has been highlighted for having one of the highest percentage of female riders in the state.
The team leadership is committed to assisting any student athlete family, new or returning, to remove any barriers that may prevent a student athlete from participating on the WHS/Watauga Middle School Composite Pioneers mountain bike team.
For the 2025 - 2026 season the regular practices start at the end of February as weather allows, and continue through to the end of the school year.
The team does participate in the North Carolina Interscholastic Cycling League race series which starts in March and runs through May. Mountain bike series races are held every other weekend with Saturday being the pre-ride and Sunday being the race heats divided into grade/gender categories. The spring race series is optional but encouraged.
This interest meeting will be for families and students to learn more about the Watauga mountain bike program and to ask any questions. The interest meeting is also open to community members interested in volunteering to join as one of the 24 volunteer coaches needed to ride with the students. Community members without students in the program, of all skill levels, are currently needed to sign up to ride with the group during practices.
Registration is requested for the interest meeting by sending an email to [email protected] with “NICA Meeting - I’m Interested” in the subject line.
