Boone Docs Film Festival returns for its 5th annual celebration of short-form documentary storytelling from the heart of Appalachia, taking over the historic Appalachian Theatre in downtown Boone for two days of films, conversation, and community. Across juried screenings and curated thematic blocks, Boone Docs spotlights filmmakers who capture the region’s people, places, challenges, and resilience with honesty and craft—then brings those stories off the screen through Q&As, and awards.
The festival kicks off Friday, February 27 with a free afternoon workshop led by filmmaker James Mottern, followed by a free evening screening of Mottern’s feature documentary A Beast Touch the Mountain, plus a panel discussion and audience Q&A. On Saturday, February 28, the daytime programming is free and includes After Helene (six documentaries exploring Hurricane Helene’s impact) and Emerging Filmmakers (ten student documentaries amplifying new voices). The weekend culminates with A Celebration of Appalachia, a ticketed evening showcase of nine documentaries about the Appalachian region, followed by filmmaker Q&A and the festival’s Awards Announcements recognizing the Jury, Audience, and Best Student Docs.
