Art, Stories and Chocolate!

Art, Stories, and Chocolate: A Celebration of Resilience Across Two Counties MARION & NEWLAND, NC – Freedom Life invites you to two extraordinary evenings of art, chocolate, and inspiring stories, as they host "Art, Stories, and Chocolate" events in McDowell and Avery counties. On May 20th, 2025, the historic Blanton House on Main Street in Marion will set the stage, followed by a second event on May 27th at the Community Center in Newland. These events are a unique fusion of artistic expression and heartfelt narratives, as Freedom Life partners with local artists to transform the reentry experiences of 12 individuals into captivating works of art. Through intimate interviews, these stories have been translated into diverse artistic mediums, from pottery and sculptures to paintings and 3D displays. "This is a celebration of resilience and the transformative power of art," says Danny Hampton, Executive Director of Freedom Life, regarding the Marion event. "We've witnessed firsthand how art can illuminate the human spirit, and we're thrilled to share these compelling stories with our McDowell County community." In Newland, Jim Smith, Regional Development Director for Freedom Life, echoes this sentiment: "This is a chance to see the resilience of the human spirit reflected through the eyes of local artists. We've seen the power of art to tell stories that resonate deeply, and we're excited to bring this experience to Newland." Both events promise a sensory delight. Attendees will be treated to the soothing melodies of a live string trio, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Local chocolatiers will offer an array of exquisite chocolate desserts and treats, and refreshing sparkling lemonade will be served. These evenings are designed to foster connection, celebrate community, and support a vital local mission. "We believe in the power of community to uplift and inspire," explains Danny Hampton. "This event is a testament to the strength and resilience of those we serve, and an invitation for our community to come together in support." "We wanted to create an event that not only celebrates the incredible journeys of our clients but also fosters a sense of community," adds Milana Ward, Freedom Life Reentry Director for Avery County. "This is a chance to come together, share stories, and support a cause that makes a real difference." These events are more than just evenings of entertainment; they are opportunities to invest in hope and transformation. By purchasing tickets and bidding on artwork, attendees will directly support Freedom Life's ongoing programs and initiatives in both McDowell and Avery counties. "Join us for an evening of connection and compassion," Hampton invites. "Experience the beauty of art, the delight of chocolate, and the power of shared stories. Leave with a unique piece of art and the satisfaction of knowing you've made a tangible difference in the lives of others." "Come and be inspired," Ward adds. "Enjoy the music, the chocolate, and the stories. Leave with a beautiful piece of art and the knowledge that you've made a meaningful impact." "Now that Freedom Life has expanded in the Avery and Yancey, we are looking at doing separate events in both locations to better connected with the community, introduce them to our clients, and build community relations with local artist and chocolatiers!" said Jim Smith.
