Port Allen - Come have a sweet ole time at the West Baton Rouge Museum’s 30th annual SugarFest on Sunday, October 5, 2025 from 11AM to 4PM with a special post-fest concert featuring Bluesman and West Baton Rouge native, Kenny Neal starting at 4 PM. This sweet celebration of the sugar cane harvest has been growing strong since 1995.
SugarFest provides visitors of all ages with a free opportunity to learn about local culture, music, and history. There will be a variety of traditional folk art and occupational craft demonstrations, a peek inside museum exhibits and historic buildings, cane cutting and grinding demonstrations, cane syrup boiling, and live music. Musical genres featured include Blues, New Orleans Jazz, Folk, Cajun, Bluegrass, and traditional Afro-Creole Singing and Drumming. Demonstrations include praline candy making, blacksmithing, bousillage making, wood working with antique hand tools, spinning, tatting, and much more. There will be old-fashioned pastimes for children to enjoy and French and Creole tables.
For our 30th anniversary, look for a silent auction full of handcrafted treasurers, as well as commemorative posters ($25) and t-shirts ($20) designed by Louisiana folk artist, Alvin Batiste. The Baton Rouge BeignYAYS, the capital city’s sweetest dance troupe will be performing and celebrating with area pageant queens and the winners of our sweets contest! We will also be recognizing local cane farmers and hosting a moderated conversation on the tradition of cane syrup making. Food and drink will be available for purchase, and artists will be selling their wares.
Of course, there will be lots of sugary treats, fresh chewing cane samples, and a sweets contest. For those age 21 and over, there will be a rum tasting and discussion on how this spirit is made from Louisiana’s sweetest cash crop. SugarFest is FREE and open to the public. Hope to see you there, SUGAR!
