1st Annual San Luis Obispo Beaver festival

The SLO Beaver Brigade invites eager beavers of all ages to the First Annual SLO County Beaver Festival on Saturday April 1 in Mission Plaza from 10 am to 3 pm. Kids welcome and encouraged to come and learn about beavers with us!

Entry is free. The day will include live music, children's activities, a beaver trivia contest, speakers, including beaver eco-hydrologist Dr. Emily Fairfax of CSU Channel Islands, Garrett Costello of Symbiotic Restoration, Michael Khus of the Northern Chumash Tribal Council and a plethora of information on the benefits that beavers provide to us in our state and county.

Live Music by The Loving Mosh and The Cuyama Mamas and the Hot Flashes.

Local and statewide organizations will be present to share materials about their efforts to protect the environment and challenge climate change.

Beaver-related merchandise and other items will be sold, along with food and drink. Of course, the Plaza is just steps away from local shops, restaurants and other interesting sites to visit.

Come to the beautiful Mission Plaza in downtown San Luis Obispo to learn about and celebrate beavers and the benefits they bring to our human and non-human community.

"We have been sharing the benefits of the beavers in our creeks and rivers over the past three years and we are so thrilled to come together as a community to celebrate and shine the light on the many ways the beavers support the health of our watersheds," said Audrey Taub, Executive Director of the SLO Beaver Brigade.

The SLO Beaver Brigade is a local organization fiscally sponsored by Ecologistics, Inc. The SLO Beaver Brigade began in 2020 to raise awareness around beavers in San Luis Obispo County and the work beavers do to combat climate change, create healthy habitat, replenish our groundwater, provide fire refugia and increase the quality and quantity of water in our creeks and rivers. Additionally, the SLO Beaver Brigade is bringing process-based restoration techniques to SLO County along with beaver management tools to allow for people and beavers to share habitat.

The SLO County Beaver Festival will showcase the emphasis of the SLO Beaver Brigade on strong public participation and education through river cleanups, citizen science surveys, tours, public art, and trail signage. The SLO Beaver Brigade frequently offers presentations and tours of beaver habitat on a donation basis to the public. To sign up for a tour, visit the SLO Beaver Brigade website at http://www.slobeaverbrigade.com/ or come to the festival to learn about the tours and the myriad of ways in which to support the important work of the world's best engineers - the beavers!

The First Annual Beaver Festival is sponsored by the Santa Barbara Permaculture Network, Morro Bay Open Space Alliance, New Times, SLO Climate Coalition, Worth A Dam, Symbiotic Restoration, California Process-Based Restoration Network, Swift Water Design, Whalebird Kombucha and Baby Bear Biscuits.
