An innovative show fusing Afro-Brazilian rhythms with American Funk, Soul, Dub and a dash of Psychedelia with a unique live-composing form used to conduct improvisation.
Exótico Americano Remixed features music from Frederico7 y Los Primes debut album “Exótico Americano,” a soulful musical journey through the Americas. Afro-Brazilian rhythms act as the album’s beating heart and give life to the psychedelic, funk, cumbia, reggae and soul sounds infused throughout the record. The project shares the group’s observations of living through North and South America and tells of a personal yet universal story. The richness of the multicultural experiences both in Austin and around the world have informed the life and art of Frederico7 y Los Primes and make it easy for them to transition from a samba song in the album to a cumbia.
“We’re all exótico Americanos,” they say. “We all have stories that are complex and that could probably make a good movie. Each one of our stories has power.”
The live-composed improvisations, conducted by Andrea Ariel, will be drawn from these songs, deconstructing and remixing them in the moment. Imagine exhilarating overtures to songs created in the moment that drop into the full song performances. Live composing adds mystery, increases anticipation and elevates excitement in performances in many different contexts. It can also engage occasional audience participation.
This conducted improvisation technique is called Soundpainting, and was created in the ’70s by jazz musician Walter Thompson. Soundpainting uses over 1500 gestures to spontaneously guide, shape and remix material in real time. Now practiced widely across Europe in both professional and educational circles, Andrea Ariel is the only artist in this region working with this form. She has worked with Thompson since 1998 and was an instrumental part of its development as a multidisciplinary form at Think Tanks in Woodstock, NY from 1999-2005. With her company, Andrea Ariel Dance Theatre, she has produced over 10 productions that included Soundpainting.
