Storytelling Art Workshops at Austin Public Library:
Tell your family’s story! Bring your cherished family photos and write about your Austin story to be considered for inclusion as painted portraits for the new public art project at Austin History Center by artist, Suzy Gonzalez. Portrait collage art workshop included for in-person attendees.
Join Suzy González, resident public artist with Austin Art in Public Places at the Austin History Center, for a series of free, public, and all-ages storytelling and art-making workshops in collaboration with Austin History Center representatives. Participants are encouraged to bring meaningful family photos to foster creative storytelling through the written word. Prompts will relate to both individual and family heritage, culture, migration, and identity. González’s public artwork will take influence from the migration of people to Austin and how each facet of Austin’s development has been influenced by this multitude of cultures in relationship to the Indigenous peoples and the land. Her goal is to uplift community members by providing a creative platform to share their stories. Family photos from the Austin community will offer inspiration to painted elements of a new public artwork encompassing past and present histories that celebrate the city of Austin and the people that call it home.
