Downpour ATX Reading Series presents Alejandro Puyana, Stephanie Macias, & Bianca Alyssa Pérez

Downpour ATX returns to Alienated Majesty with readings from local writers Alejandro Puyana, Stephanie Macias, and Bianca Alyssa Pérez. Join us on October 11 at 7pm for a night of good community and good writing. Snacks and beverages provided! ABOUT DOWNPOUR ATX DOWNPOUR is a reading series in Austin that features the voices of established and emerging writers of literary fiction in Texas and beyond. We aim to build a vibrant and welcoming community for writers and readers, including those who are BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, people with disabilities, people who have faced incarceration, people who identify as a religious minority, and those from rural and/or economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Beckoning to our own fondness for place-based writing, we take inspiration from the sudden deluges of rainfall in Texas–which can both serve as balms after a drought and formidable events of nature–and celebrate the newness, abundance, and energy that a downpour ushers in. ABOUT THE READERS Alejandro Puyana, who came to the United States from Venezuela at the age of twenty-six, received his MFA from the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas. His work has appeared in Tin House, American Short Fiction, The American Scholar, and elsewhere, and his story “Hands of Dirty Children” was reprinted in Best American Short Stories. His debut novel, "Freedom Is a Feast" is out now from Little, Brown, and was awarded the Westport Prize in Literature. He lives with his wife (the writer Brittani Sonnenberg) and daughter in Austin, Texas. Stephanie Macias is a writer, artist, and musician living in Austin, TX. She received an MFA in fiction from the University of Texas at Austin. Her stories have been a finalist for the Jesmyn Ward Prize in Fiction and longlisted for the DISQUIET Prize. Her work has appeared in Brink, No Tokens, Southern Humanities Review, and more. Between the years of 2003 and 2016, she made her living as a touring singer-songwriter, an illustrator, a photographer, and a painter. She is the managing editor at American Short Fiction and is currently working on a novel and a collection of short stories. Bianca Alyssa Pérez (she/her) is a Latina poet, educator, and editor born and raised in Mission, Texas – a small southern town bordering Mexico.
