EANES ISD HOSTS 3RD ANNUAL CENTRAL TEXAS BEST BUDDIES FRIENDSHIP WALK

Best Buddies International is a groundbreaking nonprofit founded in 1989 by Anthony K. Shriver to establish a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development and inclusive living for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The 2024 Central Texas Best Buddies Friendship Walk is presented by Waymo, and will feature fun activities like a Resource Fair, Games and Music from 9am-12pm. Eanes ISD is the first school district in the country to have a Best Buddies chapter on every campus within the district, including the post-high school Adult Transition System campus and all K-12 schools. Though this is hosted by Eanes in collaboration with Best Buddies Central Texas, the event is open to all area school districts including those with Best Buddies programs or looking to start one. Schools that will be in attendance include the University of Texas at Austin, St. Edwards, Del Valle, and Lake Travis among others. “Our Friendship Walks are one of Best Buddies' most celebrated events, bringing communities together where they can experience our mission in action and engage with our program participants,” said Anthony K. Shriver, the founder, chairman and CEO of Best Buddies International. “I am beyond grateful that the important work of this organization will continue, thanks to our participants, volunteers, partners and the entire community. I am confident that together we will continue empowering people with special abilities, connecting advocates and mobilizing our supporters to create a more inclusive world.” Last year, over 700 people attended the Friendship Walk hosted by Eanes ISD. The event featured live music & a DJ, field games, food trucks, a resource fair for businesses in the community that serve individuals with disabilities, and a very special performance by the Westlake Spirit Team. The Spirit Team is a cheer organization composed of students both with and without disabilities. Representatives for children, teachers and parents will be available for interview on site during the event.
