We invite you to join us for an exciting student-led and organized conference that happens each year at Austin Seminary, to which you and anyone you know are invited to, called HESED. This event centers issues of justice, faith, and community involvement, will be taking place on March 1 & 2, 2024 on the Austin Seminary campus, is free to register for and to attend, and is sponsored by the Latinx and African/African Diaspora Student Groups. Among other things, the event features dynamic worship, keynote lectures, workshops, community organization expo, lunch, and so much more.

Some more information on the event below, as well as available through the dedicated webpage: www.austinseminary.edu/hesed

This event will be held primarily in-person with livestreamed components. Registration is open, free of charge, and can be completed at www.austinseminary.edu/hesed. Registration comes with a free lunch as well!

The theme for this year’s HESED is “History/Whose Story? Reclaiming Our Stories.” “Popular” history has de-centered important voices of people of color, telling history in a way that amplifies the story of the oppressor and silences the voices of the oppressed. From this distorted framework have come a myriad of assumptions, practices, and policies that harm the “least of these,” oftentimes supported by theology. This conference serves as a platform to explore, revive, and celebrate the wholeness of human history by reclaiming obscured stories, perspectives, and cultures that have been underrepresented in mainstream discourse as a result of both oppressive and suppressive powers. In reclaiming these stories, we become a people who bring about hesed in our communities.

You can also follow HESED on Facebook or Instagram (@hesedataustinseminary) to learn more about HESED and to see the history of this conference, as well as staying connected with it going forward!

About HESED

The purpose of the HESED lectureship at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary is to promote awareness and church involvement in the area of social justice, thus enabling hesed, which is Hebrew for love in action. The HESED lectureship was a grassroots effort started by Austin Seminary students of the (then) African American Student Group and Hispanic Student Association in 2014 to bring scholars from black, LatinX, and other marginalized communities to Austin Seminary’s campus, in hopes that their voices would deepen the community’s conversations in response to issues of justice as faced by these students and their communities.
