While Dorothy Silverstein was growing up in Atlantic City in the early 1940s, much of her extended family was in Nazi-occupied Poland. Eventually they were imprisoned in the Lodz Ghetto, the only sealed ghetto in all of Europe. Meanwhile, the author's eldest brother, Joey, served in the U.S. military as a medic with the 120th Evacuation Hospital, which was attached to Patton's Third Army during the liberation of Buchenwald concentration camp.
As an adult, Silverstein discovered letters both from her murdered grandmother and her G.I. brother Joey, which sent her on a journey to understand life and death in the Lodz Ghetto, the movements of the 120th Evacuation Hospital toward the end of the war — and how American corporations were complicit and benefitted from the Nazi system all along.
