SURF CITY – Airships appeared to be the future of passenger aviation until May 6, 1937, when the Hindenburg crashed in a stunning fireball at New Jersey’s Naval Air Station Lakehurst. Relive its last flight during “The Hindenburg Experience” at the Ocean County Library Long Beach Island Branch, 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 7. Measuring nearly 804 feet in length and 135 feet in diameter, the German airship was the largest aircraft ever to fly and pioneered transatlantic air service. What triggered the disaster? What was the cost in lives? How did it alter the future of global air travel? Navy Lakehurst Historical Society member Bill Schmidt will reveal the details. The Navy Lakehurst Historical Society maintains a museum of artifacts salvaged from the dirigible on the grounds of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, within view of the spot of the devastation which is marked by a plaque.
