Wildlands Conservancy – Monarch Tagging with Master Gardeners

Each fall, millions of monarch butterflies migrate thousands of miles from North America to central Mexico—a journey that's both extraordinary and fragile. Monarch tagging is a citizen science tool that helps researchers track this migration, identify population trends, and better understand the challenges monarchs face along the way. Join Wildlands Conservancy and the Penn State Master Gardeners for a hands-on monarch butterfly tagging event at the Saucon Valley Rail Trail Parking lot in Bethlehem! This immersive experience invites participants to contribute to real scientific research while learning how to support pollinator conservation. Participants will: Learn how to safely capture and handle monarchs Tag butterflies with official tracking stickers used in national migration studies Explore the importance of native plants and pollinator-friendly habitats Contribute directly to citizen science efforts helping to conserve the monarch population Take a guided tour of a native garden created and maintained by the Penn State Master Gardeners We'll meet at the Saucon Valley Rail Trail Parking lot in Bethlehem (Coordinates: 40.558372, -75.356339) and walk a short distance along the trail to explore the gardens and search for monarchs among wildflowers and milkweed patches. All materials will be provided. Please wear comfortable shoes, sun protection, and bring a water bottle. Pre-registration is required to help us plan for materials and group sizes. Program is free; online pre-registration is required. Questions? Contact Nicole Landis at [email protected]
