Forgotten History Tours

POTTSTOWN, PA: Margaret, Nancy, Flora, Andrew, Arch, Guinea, Cesar, Ishmael, Mulatto Peter, Cato, Cudgeo, Black Peter, Adam. These are the names of enslaved individuals who appear in the 1768 probate inventory of John Potts Sr., a wealthy Pennsylvania ironmaster. As this document indicates, Potts was no stranger to utilizing enslaved and free labor to support his household and iron industry ventures. Join the staff of Pottsgrove Manor on Saturday, June 21st, and Sunday, June 22nd, for Forgotten History Tours. Visitors are invited to see the Manor through the eyes of the free and enslaved people of color who lived and labored in Potts family households, forges, and furnaces. Tours will showcase Pottsgrove Manor’s ongoing research into the biographies of individuals like Andrew Tarr, Peter Sebastian, Guinea Kane, and Flora. At the end of your tour, sneak a peek at our genealogical research, tracing descendants to the present day. Come take a tour to hear their stories and discover their journeys. Connect with their forgotten histories and learn their names. Please note that during this program, tours will run every hour on the hour, beginning at 10am with the first tour on Saturday and at 1pm on Sunday. The final tour of the day starts at 3pm both days. * A donation of $2 per person is suggested.
