Kutztown Day
Kutztown Day, a tradition since 1907, has been celebrated the first Sunday in August and is held at the Kutztown Park. Kutztown Day officially kicks off at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 4th, with the first concert in the bandshell featuring the local band “The ZEPTONES” playing from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Mayor James Schlegel will provide the Official Welcome and Opening Remarks prior to the start of the concert at 1:00 p.m. The evening bandshell concert will feature award the band “TIMEWHYS” , on the concert stage from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. . Come early, and grab seats in the covered bandshell with the indoor bench seating and ceiling fans , or bring your lawn chairs for great seating in the lawn area outside.
From start to finish, from 1:00 through 8:30 p.m. the upper park area will be full with many food vendors selling burgers, dogs, French fries, cheese steaks, sausage sandwiches, pizza, ice cream, barbeque, and other foods to be added. Various groups and organizations will be sponsoring events, games and demonstrations throughout the park from 1:00 – 8:00 p.m. to include Max’s Moon Bounce, Bingo in the Scooter Building from 1:30 – 3:30, Optimist Club “Hit, Run & Pitch” 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., a Quoit Tournament at 2:00 p.m. with team sign-ups prior and tournament to follow. The Kutztown Elementary School Parents Club will be sponsoring children’s games at 3:00pm, and Kutztown Oasis/Cornerstone Church will be sponsoring “Gaga Ball” and other games for youth from 1:00 – 5:00 . There will be a Disc Golf course set up and available from 1:00 - 6:30 with a prize for the winner. The Kutztown Fire Company will have “Fire Safety Activities” all day, along with the Kutztown Police Department set up from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. doing “Kinner Cards” . The Kutztown Lions Club will be sponsoring Vision Screening between 1:00 – 5:00. Local Folk Creative Studio will be sponsoring Children’s Crafts from 1:00 – 5:00 , and there will be a Cake Baking Contest (all participant entry registration forms must be submitted in advance) with judging at 3:30 with a CakeWalk to follow, planned for 4:30 on the basketball court. New to the lineup this year, for the first time , the Virginville Grange will sell their famous homemade Shoofly Pies on a first come first served basis until gone, starting at 3:30. There will be a display table presented by Katie Miller of “Conquer Your Court” Tennis, and also Tennis Demonstrations on the tennis courts from 2:00 -2:45 and 4:00 – 4:45.
Throughout the day at the Kutztown Day Table, the Committee Members and volunteers will be selling Raffle Tickets, T-Shirts and hats, with the raffle ticket drawing at 9:00 p.m. in the lower park on the hillside prior to the Fireworks. In addition, for the children, the Kutztown Day Committee members and volunteers will be taking registrations for drawing of 2 bicycles - a boys bicycle, and a girls bicycle, which will be awarded around 5:45 p.m., and a few other drawings to be announced the day of the event.
As the evening moves on the festivities will move from the upper Park area to the lower park as the crowd will gather on the Hillside for the Fireworks. To entertain that crowd, the local rock band, “JUNIOR’S GRADES” , will perform from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. , entertaining the Fireworks hillside crowd. Following their performance the Kutztown Day Raffle Drawing will take place at 9:00 p.m., followed by the singing of the National Anthem, leading to the culmination of the day – the Fireworks display.
