Roy Louis Smith, a formerly local to the Lehigh Valley singer, songwriter, and musician, relies on MED-EL cochlear implants for his profound musical journey. Representing US musicians at MED-EL’s international music festival for deaf musicians, Roy is not only an advocate for the transformative power of cochlear implants but also a testament to their impact on musical expression. His album “Mended Spirit” serves as a heartfelt tribute to those instrumental in his hearing journey, including the University of North Carolina’s surgeons and audiologists, the MED-EL Corporation’s scientists and engineers, and, most significantly, his wife, Janet. Additionally, the Roy and Janet Smith Cochlear Implant Research Fund, administered by the University of North Carolina Health Foundation, stands as a testament to their commitment to advancing cochlear implant research.
