Members' Opening & Book Launch

NCHGS members are invited to a special opening for General Happiness of the People: Easton as a Revolutionary Capital, a new immersive exhibition at the 1753 Bachmann Publick House. Through guided tours, projections, soundscapes, and hands-on replica artifacts, visitors will experience the 1753 Bachmann Publick House as a lively eighteenth-century gathering place where neighbors met, ideas circulated, and the American Revolution began to take shape. The exhibition explores Pennsylvania’s early constitutional ideal of promoting the “general happiness of the people” through the stories of Northampton County residents whose lives were shaped by law, politics, labor, and community. In the building’s historic courtroom, visitors will encounter stories of individuals who came seeking justice while discovering how daily life and governance were deeply connected in early America. General Happiness of the People also expands the Revolutionary narrative by highlighting voices often left out of traditional histories, including women, laborers, pacifists, loyalists, and enslaved individuals. The evening will also feature a special author meet-and-greet and book launch with illustrator and author Jonathan Hill, celebrating a new graphic novel written by NCHGS and inspired by ten stories connected to the 1753 Bachmann Publick House. Guests will have the opportunity to meet the artist, learn about the creative, collaborative process behind the project, and purchase signed copies. Join fellow members for an evening of history, storytelling, and community as we celebrate this exciting new exhibition and the many voices that shaped Northampton County at the nation’s founding. General Happiness of the People is funded in part by grants from the A.P. Kirby, Jr. Foundation, Ken & Lois Wildrick, Linda Heindel, the County of Northampton, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
