A Choctaw painter whose practice explores the layered relationships between memory, culture, and landscape, Lawson brings an evocative body of work to Albuquerque that resonates with both personal and collective meaning. Amanda’s return to painting was sparked by the passing of her mother—a pivotal moment that deepened her connection to creativity and compelled her to pursue her art full-time. Her work is grounded in the natural world, often inspired by the landscapes of Oklahoma where she was raised and the high desert beauty of her current home in New Mexico. Through bold color, texture, and metaphor, she captures the spirit of place in a way that feels both grounded and ethereal. One of the most distinctive aspects of Lawson’s style is her use of acrylic shards, fragments that she layers into her canvases. These shards serve as visual metaphors for unseen forces—heat radiating from fire, the pull of cultural ties, the echo of memory—that can be felt but not touched. This unique technique gives her paintings a vibrancy and movement that invite viewers to look closer, to consider what lies beneath the surface of both the land and the self. Her work has been shown in regional exhibitions and community showcases, where it has been celebrated for its ability to bridge myth, reality, and lived experience.
