Squirrels are perhaps most well-known for “squirreling-away,” that is, gathering and storing, nuts to eat later. So, when we see busy squirrels in the fall, we tend to associate their heightened activity with gathering a food supply for the winter. However, squirrels have a lesser-known fall project that is more noticeable once the trees have lost their leaves. Like all animals, squirrels need food, water, and shelter to survive in a habitat, but we learn through this lesson that the squirrel, our animal neighbor, is especially resourceful.
