Pollinators: What Are They? Why Should We Care?
Did you know that pollinators are specific to certain plants or trees? The bee that pollinates almonds can’t do the same for Cacao (used to make chocolate). That pollinator is a tiny gnat, the size of a pinhead, called a “midge”. And, a midge can’t pollinate the flower of the fig. Have you ever seen the fig’s flower? It’s actually inside the immature fig itself, and there’s only one small wasp that pollinates the interior flower. For this reason, along with habitat loss, environmental and other factors, pollinators worldwide, in every shape and size, are in real danger. There’s just so much fascinating info that people are completely unaware of. And unless we begin to protect these ‘animals’ as they’re called, there could be a terrible cascade of linked extinctions. We also have to remember that most pollinators live on nectar, so they aren’t just lovely to look at, we really do need flowers everywhere! Registration is required.
