St. John's Episcopal Church in Troy invites the community to a free organ concert featuring the premiere of a new composition by Alfred Fedak 3pm Sunday, October 6. Both the concert and the new work will honor recently retired organist and choirmaster Ted Phillips, who served St. John’s in that role for nearly 20 years and died September 12.
The piece was originally commissioned to surprise Ted Phillips with a new congregational and choral arrangement of his favorite hymn, “He Who Would Valiant Be."
Daniel Romero, organist and choirmaster at Albany's St. Peter's Episcopal Church, will headline the program of music played on St. John's restored Aeolian Skinner organ, along with choir and other musicians. In addition to the Fedak premiere, the concert will include pieces by J. S. Bach,FelixMendelssohn, Herbert Howells, and Austin Lovelace.
A reception will follow.
There is no admission fee, but any donations to the church’s organ fund will be welcome.
There is ample free parking across from the church in its parking lot on First Street, as well as on thestreet and in a kitty-corner Russell Sage College lot. A handicapped entrance is available to the left of the main entrance, off Liberty Street.
