Hear Them Now: Stories of the Enslaved at Schuyler Mansion

Starting on February 1, 2024, Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site will be offering a tour focused on the personal lives and experiences of the people once enslaved by the Schuylers called “Hear Them Now: Stories of the Enslaved at Schuyler Mansion.” Over the course of their lifetimes, the Schuylers enslaved more than sixty people of African ancestry. On this tour, visitors will gain insight into the lives of some of these individuals, including Silva, who was likely the cook and a fortuneteller, and Claas, a cart driver who escaped bondage by joining the British during the Revolutionary War. Their stories and many others will be explored through primary-source documents and interactive activities. Each tour varies from 60 to 80 minutes long, and conversation about the research and the various interpretations of it is highly encouraged. The tour is available by reservation and is held at 2PM on Thursdays and Saturdays in February, with plans to offer it again in May and June. Admission price is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and students, and children twelve and under are free. You can make a reservation for the tour by calling Schuyler Mansion at 518-434-0834 and speaking to a staff member. This tour was developed using primary evidence and in consultation with NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation’s Interpreter of African American History, descendants, humanities scholars, and other historic sites.
