Chinese calligraphy workshop

From Breath to Brush As an artist, I always seek places where I can share the work I create. As a Chinese calligrapher, since my art is about the many layers of the written word (meaning, sound, image, presentation, and above all, the presence of the writer at the moment of writing) I can imagine no more suitable place to share than a library. I left China 30 years ago; I have been leaning and practicing Chinese Calligraphy for over 40 years. In past 10 years, I attended multicultural activities, such as fairs and festivals in NYS many times to demonstrate the beauty of Chinese Calligraphy. I find inspiration for my art through sharing it with new audiences. It is an extremely popular way to connect with non-chinses speakers. But it can also be very superficial. From Breath to Brush is about presenting Chinese calligraphy in way that not only makes a connection, but maybe even opens a window to a new relationship with the act of writing. This free workshop is funded by Arts Center of Capital region. Every one is welcome and all the materials are provided. Choosing a word, then writing it, can be acknowledged as a layered process of conveying intention - from chosen word to breath, from breath to brush - and a meditation in motion. From Breath to Brush is an interactive installation - simple yet well-made informational plaques and fixtures, a slim flat screen video with a headset jack, and tables for writing on when there is an active demonstration. The design slows down the visitor's journey from busy life to creative focus. The exhibited works and materials prepare the visitor to go deeper not only in conversation with the artist - who will write your name using Chinese characters selected for their sound, meaning, and visual impact - but with the medium of the written word. As a Chinese artist, in this multicultural region, I feel moved to use my art to build deeper understanding and connections.
