The Reading Is Fun Program will host its fourth annual, team “Scrabble-Rama” tournament & fundraiser on Saturday, June 1 at Schenectady High School. Proceeds will help purchase thousands of books for Schenectady Pre-K–third grade students enrolled in their one-on-one, mentorship program. The cost to enter is $20 per person and includes a continental breakfast, access to unique raffle items & prizes, and immortal bragging rights if one’s team is victorious. “Scrabble-Rama helps fund home libraries for the Schenectady children enrolled in our program. According to Social Science Research, books in a child’s home help to build vocabularies, increase comprehension and expand horizons,” says Dr. Al Magid, program founder. “Scrabble-Rama also lets competitively inclined wordsmiths from all over New York State show off their skills.” 2023’s winning team, “Highway to Spell,” will be back to defend their title against possible re-entrants, “We Love Neurobiologists,” “Lexiconic Ladies,” and team “Forgot More Words Than You Know.” Last year, a winning board contained the 15-letter-word, EXTRACURRICULAR and SUPERINTENDENT. Teams who find themselves stuck can “buy a letter” or pay to look up a word in the dictionary. Doors open at 8 a.m. The competition runs from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Teams must consist of 2 to 4 players and will register by visiting www.readingisfun.org/scrabble-rama-2024 and print, fill out and mail back the registration form, along with an enclosed check. All teams must register by May 15, 2024. Try to beat the 8,668-point high score, join to have fun with friends, or consider becoming a trained reading volunteer, yourself. About The Reading is Fun Program: The Reading Is Fun Program is a partner of the Schenectady City School District Educational Foundation, a 501 (c)(3), located in Schenectady, N.Y. Our purpose is to train volunteers to help pre-k to third grade students attain grade-level reading skills in all eleven Schenectady elementary schools. Today, 109 trained volunteers are mentoring 272 students. Executive Director and Founder, Dr. Al Magid, Emeritus Professor of Political Science at SUNY Albany, created the program in 2013, to help close the gap in literacy rates & academic achievement among the children of Schenectady City School District.
