Artist G. Peter Jemison will discuss the historical events that inspired his piece 1687 War (after Guernica). In 1687, the French forces attacked the Seneca village at Ganondagan. However, they were outsmarted by the Seneca who sent their women and children safely away and burned the remaining crops and longhouses before the French could destroy them. Jemison will discuss the artistic references to Pablo Picasso’s Guernica (1937) and his choice to make a statement about the horrors of warfare. G. Peter Jemison is a contributing artist to the Each One Inspired: Indigenous Art Across the Homelands exhibit that is currently on view here at the New York State Museum.
