The Memoir of a Female Soldier
Deborah Sampson was stationed at West Point for a year and a half. Chosen for the elite Light Infantry, she went on dangerous forward patrols to engage the loyalist Tories who were terrorizing the Hudson Valley. She was wounded in combat and promoted as an aide to a general from Lenox, Mass. After her gender was discovered while unconscious with a near-fatal fever, she received an honorable discharge. Later she became the first American woman to be the subject of a biography and the first to go on a lecture tour, in her quest to receive a veteran’s pension long denied her. Jan Lewis Nelson grew up in the same town as Sampson and lived in the house where Sampson was born while researching the book. Written nearly fifty years ago, it was first published posthumously in 2023 by her husband Steve, who will give the talk. Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing..
