Archeology started in 2017 of a planned development n in the Town of Poughkeepsie, the location included about 60 acres (24 ha) of agricultural land spanning the Dutchess Turnpike (US Route 44). Most locals knew these lands as the Frank Brothers farmstead, who immigrated from Germany in the early 1900s and became well-known for their sausage and meats. However, these same farmlands were historically thought to have an earlier history that had faded in the dimness of time far from the collective memories of most locals. From so long ago that some might question whether it existed at all. But, somewhere on these lands was believed by some to be the archeological remains of an 18th-century farm cut from the wilderness by William Barnes, who immigrated from Holland in the early 1700s. This paper summarizes the archaeological discovery of this earlier farmstead and the remarkable story that it had to tell.
