Harmony of Light: A Beacon of Unity for Our Community

This year has been incredibly significant for the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse as we celebrated its 150th birthday. As we close this chapter with the lighting ceremony, the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society (HALPS) is grateful and honored to have made new friends, partnered with wonderful organizations, and brought the lighthouse back into the heart of our community. As American author Anne Lamott once said, "Lighthouses don’t go running all over an island looking for boats to save; they just stand there shining." By simply being present and offering light, we help others find their way. In November 1874, the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse—then known as Hudson City Light—first illuminated its beacon, guiding ships along the Hudson River. One hundred fifty years later, we not only celebrate this historic milestone but also honor the dedicated lightkeepers who devoted their lives to preserving this maritime treasure. Their legacy continues to shine, keeping our beloved landmark alive for future generations. HALPS warmly invites you to join us for a special lighting ceremony to commemorate this milestone. As we reflect on when the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse first cast its light to guide people safely, we will gather with gratitude, hope for a bright future, and expressions for peace and unity. The Hudson Community Choir will perform, and we will light the lighthouse at sunset. The ceremony will take place at both the Hudson Riverfront Park and the Athens Riverfront Park. We’ll assemble at 5:00 pm, listen to the choir, and wait for sunset to illuminate the lighthouse. Please bring a candle to light along with us. The Hudson Community Choir (in partnership with Beautiful Racket Inc. and Hudson Hall) is a free, non-audition choir based in Hudson, NY. Founded in 2023 by community members Anneice Cousin, Jess Laddin, and Sharece Johnson, the choir welcomes singers of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Their mission is to foster connection, belonging, and joy through music, creating an inclusive space where everyone can come together in song to support the Hudson community and beyond. About the conductor: Michael Hofman Born and raised in northern New Jersey, Micheal has been a Hudson Valley resident for 15 years. He holds a B.A. in music from Vassar College and an M.M. in voice from the Bard College Conservatory. Michael's experience as a musical artist spans choral and operatic performance, conducting vocal and instrumental ensembles, and stage direction & management. As a baritone, he has sung regularly with several New York-based choral ensembles and small opera companies, including The Choir of St. Luke in the Fields, Canticum Scholare, and Opera on Tap, and currently is a staff singer at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran in Poughkeepsie.
