Young French Cinema

Calling all Francophiles: Spend your Saturday watching three new acclaimed films from France! Larry Kardish, FilmColumbia Co-Executive Director and Co-Artistic Director, has chosen three films made by emerging French filmmakers to share with upstate audiences this Saturday. Pauline Loquès' Nino (1pm) stars newcomer Théodore Pellerin, who plays a shy young man confronting his mortality after being diagnosed with cancer. Pellerin's performance won him a Rising Star Award at Cannes last May and Best Male Breakthrough at the Césars, where Nino also won Best First Film. In Louise Hémon’s crafty period drama, The Girl in the Snow (4pm), a young schoolteacher arrives in an alpine village just before a tragic avalanche claims its first victim. The film won France's prestigious Prix Jean Vigo Prize. Leave One Day (7pm) is a nostalgic musical comedy that follows a rising chef on the cusp of opening a restaurant in Paris, before an emergency draws her back to her hometown. Far from the hustle and bustle, she begins to long for her old life. This debut feature from director Amélie Bonnin was the Opening Night Film at Cannes and received four nominations at the Césars.
