In a tribute to the late documentarian Frederick Wiseman, who died in February with 50 films to his credit, we will screen three of his works this Saturday. Ballet (1995) opens a window into New York City's prestigious American Ballet Theatre – its rehearsals, administrative machinations, the interior and exterior lives of its dancers and choreographers, as well as their sublime performances. It screens at 12:30pm.
At 4pm we'll present one of Wiseman's final works, In Jackson Heights (2015), which immerses viewers in the richly diverse and densely populated NYC neighborhood for which the film was named.
Often regarded as the masterwork of Wiseman's early period, Welfare (1975), will screen at 7:30pm.
Frederick Wiseman (1930 - 2026), the celebrated director of Titicut Follies and dozens of other documentaries, created a unique and revelatory history of American institutions with his direct, unnarrated and in-depth approach. Rejecting cinéma vérité, which he felt was just a "pompous French term that has absolutely no meaning," his filmmaking style developed from his equally gifted instinct as an editor. He spent the majority of each production editing the material, trying to find a rhythm for the film. He was known to call his films "reality fictions." Wiseman was awarded an Honorary Academy Award in 2016.
