A Film about Jimi Hendrix: Crandell LIVE! Q&A with Producer Joe Boyd and Musician Juma Sulta
On Sunday, June 7 at 4pm, the Crandell Theatre will screen A Film About Jimi Hendrix, the groundbreaking 1973 music documentary featuring some of the best and most important live performances in rock n' roll history. The first major posthumous retrospective of the iconic guitarist, the documentary was produced by Joe Boyd, who co-created the film with John Head and Gary Weis three years after Jimi Hendrix's untimely death at age 27. The film blends riveting live concert footage of Hendrix from 1967 to 1970, including his stellar turns at the Monterey Pop Festival, the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival, Woodstock, and the Fillmore East. Revealing interviews with Eric Clapton, Little Richard, Lou Reed, Mick Jagger, Pete Townsend, and many other rock legends complete the portrait of an artist at his peak.
We are thrilled to welcome music producer Joe Boyd and Jimi’s bandmate Juma Sultan for a rare Q&A about recording and performing with Hendrix. Boyd will join us via Zoom from London and Sultan will join us in person.

JOE BOYD
The founder of Hannibal Records, the pioneering British label that helped establish the folk-rock and world music genres, Joe Boyd has produced dozens of iconic records for Pink Floyd, Nico, Nick Drake, Billy Bragg, 10,000 Maniacs, and R.E.M. A longtime music industry impresario with a knack for being in the right place at the right time, Boyd was responsible for running the sound board at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival when Bob Dylan famously went electric. He was a music supervisor on Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange and John Boorman's Deliverance. More recently, he served as executive producer of the iconic 2019 Aretha Franklin documentary Amazing Grace; he was instrumental in organizing the original 1972 shoot of Franklin's historic gospel recordings and shepherded the film to its eventual release decades later. Boyd is the author of And the Roots of Rhythm Remain: A Journey Through Global Music (2024) and White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s (2006).
JUMA SULTAN
Musician, composer, and archivist Juma Sultan is most widely known for his deep association with Jimi Hendrix, famously closing out the Woodstock Festival and appearing on numerous posthumous Hendrix releases. During one Sunday drum circle in the summer of 1969, Juma was approached by a certain James Marshall Hendrix, who asked him on the spot to join his band for their upcoming performance at Woodstock. The pair started spending time together and became very close friends. Juma wrote and recorded with Hendrix from late 1969 until the guitarist’s death. He has also collaborated with Sonny Simmons, James “Blood” Ulmer, Pharaoh Sanders, Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler, Sam Rivers, and many more.
