Sun Dogs + Sam Torres

SUN DOGS Sun Dogs is the sci-fi jazz duo of Dominique Vuvan and Adam Tinkle, like-minded sonic explorers who have long probed the outer reaches of music - Vuvan as a psychologist who studies the neuroscience of music, and Tinkle as a multi-instrumentalist and multimedia artist who studied with experimentalist legends Alvin Lucier, Anthony Braxton and Anthony Davis. In the post-lockdown DIY renaissance of 2021, Dom and Adam began hosting a house concert series, and it was at one of these events, before a live audience and over the course of the year’s latest sunset, that Sun Dogs captured its debut album, The Solstice Concert, a semi-improvisational suite of soundscapes, harmonic territories and synthesizer textures, where hypnotic moon bells and spaceship sounds undergird the spirited test flights of flute, clarinet, and saxophone, and interpenetrate with Tinkle’s space-time-fractured field recordings, captured on fieldwork in Nepal. In the years since, they’ve shared regional stages with leading lights of cross-genre experimentalism like SUUNS, Earth Tongues, and Medicine Singers, and have expanded their sound palette - as the performance situation allows - to include all-acoustic meditations beside their electronic journeys. SAM TORRES Multi-instrumentalist, audio engineer, and professional listener Sam Torres has been making improvised ambient music for a decade using only his saxophone and live electronics. The music is rich, layered, and sonically complex: always shifting and evolving, and always improvised live with no pre-recorded elements. Performing alongside software of his own creation that reacts and breathes, Sam develops singular, musical worlds. Presented by the Department of Music This event is free and open to the public. No ticket required.
