Skidmore in Concert: Orchestra

Skidmore in Concert is a free public series celebrating the excellence of the Music Department and the vibrancy of Skidmore’s artistic community. This concert features the Skidmore Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Georgia Markakis Mills, performing a program that spans the luminous textures of Kaija Saariaho’s Lumière et Pesanteur, the color and charm of Maurice Ravel’s Ma mère l’Oye Suite, the enduring Americana of Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring, and the celestial beauty of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, IV. “Das himmlische Leben,” featuring Dr. Sylvia Stoner-Hawkins, voice. A Greek-American conductor, pianist, and educator, Dr. Mills is known for her inventive approach to both classical and contemporary music. Her career includes collaborations with leading composers such as Julia Wolfe, Nico Muhly, and Augusta Read Thomas, and appearances with ensembles including the Rochester Philharmonic, Alarm Will Sound, and the International Contemporary Ensemble. Currently Music Director of the Skidmore Orchestra and Assistant Professor of Music at Skidmore College, Dr. Mills earned her Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from the Eastman School of Music, where she received the Walter Hagen Conducting Prize. RSVP is encouraged. Presented by the Skidmore College Department of Music.
