Fort McMurray, Alberta, a hub of the Canadian oil industry, where oil is teased out of the tar sands, is set deep in the wild northern forest. On May 16, 2016, a fierce fire destroyed the city, melting its guns and burning its cars and houses, but the 88,000 residents escaped in a one-afternoon evacuation. Vaillant relates this inconceivable event to carbon dioxide pollution and the profit motive.
