Reception–Monica Jane Frisell and Adam Scher: Portrait of US
The opening reception for Monica Jane Frisell and Adam Scher: "Portrait of US" will be held on April 6, from 1-3pm, as part of the 2024 NEA Big Read Kickoff. Pick up your free copy of this year's book, "Homegoing" by Yaa Gyasi, and enjoy other complementary receptions at the event.
"Portrait of US" is an evolving audiovisual archive of intimate stories told by ordinary people. The artists Monica Jane Frisell and Adam Scher create the audiovisual portraits in their Nomadic Photo Ark, a roaming black and white darkroom and art studio, as they weave their way across the United States.Frisell and Scher visited Massillon with the Nomadic Photo Ark from September 25 through October 6, 2023. Their Studio M exhibition will include audiovisual portraits of Stark County residents whom they interviewed, along with other portraits from the project.
The exhibition is presented as part of the NEA Big Read, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. At the 2024 Big Read Kickoff, the Massillon Public Library will be onsite with the Bookmobile. Enjoy receptions for the complementary exhibitions "Home Again: The Embodiment of Africa through Art and Fabric" in the Main Gallery, and "Family Means to Me" in the Fred F. Silk Community Room Gallery. Enjoy a performance by the EN-RICH-MENT of Stark County drumline in Gessner Hall at 2:00 p.m.
