Renewable Energy Impacts on Utilities – Causes and Solutions

OVERVIEW The increasing penetration of renewable energy generation (particularly solar but to some extent also wind) can negatively impact utility operations. California and Arizona are experiencing a significant increase in negative hourly generation costs, minimum load conditions with mandatory curtailments, and excessive ramping requirements.
WHY SHOULD YOU ATTEND
This short course will describe what is causing these negative impacts on utility operations, how the utilities in California and Arizona are trying to address this with rate design, some of the utility system options and alternatives available to address the issue, and some of the alternatives that customers can use to preserve or enhance the value of their renewable generation.
AREAS COVERED
• Renewable energy (wind and solar) generation profiles
• Description and development of the “duck curve”
• Utility rate period changes
• Tools customers can use to ameliorate some of the impacts of rate period changes
• Rate period change impact on solar generation project economics
• Utility system modifications - energy storage, fast ramping resources, microgrids, regional sharing
• Consumer options to preserve or enhance solar generation project economics
• Microgrid operation and economics
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Renewable energy (wind and solar) generation profiles
• Impact on utility dispatch – “duck curve”
• Utility efforts to address the issue – TOU period changes
• Identification of likely winners and losers with rate period changes and actions that can be taken to ameliorate some of the negative impacts of rate period changes
• Impact of rate period changes on solar generation project economics
• Utility system solutions to the duck curve – energy storage, fast ramping resources, microgrids, regional sharing
• Consumer options to preserve or enhance solar generation project economics
• The case for micro grids
WHO WILL BENEFIT
Anyone who has an interest in renewable energy projects is the owner of renewable energy projects, or is a utility customer of a utility with significant renewable energy generation.
