'Dr. Mütter's Marvels' Book Launch and Author Talk

Come celebrate the life, work and legacy of Thomas Dent Mütter, founder of the Mütter Museum at the official paperback release party for the New York Times bestselling nonfiction book, Dr. Mütter's Marvels:A True Tale of Intrigue and Innovation at the Dawn of Modern Medicine.

America in the early 1800s was an easy place to die, especially for those unlucky souls so severely deformed that medicine at the time literally classified them as monsters. Enter Thomas Dent Mütter, a brilliant and audacious young mid-19th century plastic surgeon who revolutionized American medicine with his daring surgical work, his innovative teaching, and by passionately advocating for a compassion-based vision for helping even the most seemingly hopeless of patients.

Author Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz will be in conversation with Thomas Jefferson University head archivist F. Michael Angelo about Mütter's role as an outlier and game-changer in early 19th century medicine. This lively presentation will include numerous illustrations and specimens from the archive of Thomas Jefferson University, where Mutter taught and served as Chair of Surgery for a decade and half.

Through Mutter's story, you will be given a front row seat to the good, the bad and the grotesque of the evolution of American medicine, while also helping to "rescu[e]… from undeserved obscurity the story of a man so flamboyant, in life and in the operating theater, that he would be crowned the "[P. T.] Barnum of the surgery room.
