Obon is a Japanese celebration of one’s ancestors. Each August, people return to their hometowns to remember the dead and reunite with loved ones. Obon is celebrated with festivities, especially dances called bon odori.
On August 27, Shofuso Japanese House and Garden will host Philadelphia’s 5th Annual Obon celebration. The festivities will include the eponymous dances, taiko drumming by Kyo Daiko, tea ceremony demonstrations by Urasenke Philadelphia, traditional games, arts & crafts, as well as vendors selling traditional goods. Poi Dog Philly will be on hand selling Japanese Hawaiian fare. Join us for a day of celebration outside the gates of Shofuso Japanese House and Garden. The festival is free and open to the public.
In the event of inclement weather, the Obon festival will be held on Sunday, September 3.
