Madison Smartt Bell discusses his new novel Behind the Moon with Philadelphia-based writer Andrew Ervin at the Penn Book Center on Monday, May 15th at 6pm.
Bell is best known for his trilogy of novels about Toussaint Louverture and the Haitian Revolution, including All Souls' Rising, which was a finalist for the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award. His last novel, The Color of Night, appeared from Vintage Contemporaries in April 2011. Since 1984 he has taught in the Goucher College Creative Writing Program, where he is currently Professor of English.
Behind the Moon tells the story of a mother and daughter who “reconnect' after many years apart. A.M. Homes says it's 'Madison Smart Bell at his best,” while Dorothy Allison explains, 'Between fever dreams and stone hard reality, Madison Smartt Bell has crafted a powerful examination of what is and what might be. It is simply wonderful.”
