Pirates invade the Delaware River at Philadelphia’s very own Renaissance Faire. With its second full season arriving May 2017, the faire brings a new adventure of love, laughter, and mayhem to families and audiences of all ages. A renaissance faire is a re-creation of a European medieval or renaissance village – full of vendors, performers, games, and food. Staff and many faire patrons play a role by dressing in historical or whimsical costumes. The lineup of performers and vendors are their own thrill: singers Chaste Treasure (a “questionably chaste” trio of upperclass ladies), magician and madman Daniel Greenwolf, the family-fun Shakespeare Approves, and the Mongolian décor at Traders of Tamerlane. The fledgling Philadelphia Faire offers something for everyone. “We have cannons, we have fire eaters, we have mythic folk music,” says Maisha Elonai, director of entertainment and independent acts. “We have all the renaissance faire standards, from archery to turkey legs. But what makes the Philadelphia Renaissance Faire special is its inclusivity.” “People of all races, ages, orientations, beliefs – everyone is welcome here. We’ve abandoned the trope of Western Europe in preference of a Mediterranean village where anyone can feel like they have a role,” says Cnaan, a fantasy-based event planner and businessman. “Come as who you are or who you want to be.” “Fort Mifflin is amazing, too,” says Philly Faire founder Patrick Colleton. “I was looking for a new venue, and as soon as I found it, I fell in love.”
