Critical Reading for Kids-Live Online Class for 6 Weeks!
This is a six week course that meets twice a week to help foster student's analytical reading skills. Class will be conducted via ZOOM for 45 minutes each class. Students will read fiction and non-fiction texts in class to analyze for meaning.
Students will receive direct instruction, guided practice and independent practice. Students will increase their critical thinking skills by learning how to analyze text structure to help comprehend a text.
Students will meet two times a week. Learners may also choose the asynchronous option as well if they like the flexibility and ability to work at their own pace. Each week we will discuss a different element of critically analyzing a text.
Lesson Topics will include:
1. Students will read and analyze the the structure of a fiction short story and engage in a think-pair-share discussion in response to multiple-choice comprehension questions.
2. Students will work in mixed-ability groups to discuss how the article is structured or organized, paying particular attention to the headers. 3. Students will read a non-fiction article and record cause and effect on sticky notes, selecting relevant text-based details from the article.
4. Students will read a fiction short story and analyze the elements of plot in a narrative. We will focus on: point of view, exposition, conflict, characterizations, etc.

Reading aloud is a proven method to help increase reading fluency. In this class, students will get the opportunity to practice reading aloud to improve their skills. For this age range, our targeted words per minute read will be between 90 and 115. All students will be pre-assessed and given an individual goal. Class will be conducted via ZOOM for 45 minutes each class
What better way to learn than through repetition? The classes will consist of a combination of echo, paired, and choral reading. Each student will have an opportunity to read aloud. Watch students increase their reading confidence in this class!
