Your Guide to Staying Cool at Outdoor Events This Summer

Wednesday, May, 24, 2023

Detail mme

By Lee Romano Sequeira

Warmer weather is here, and that means things are heating up! Whether you're attending a music festival, a sporting event, or any other outdoor activity, staying cool in hot weather is essential to enjoying whatever experience you’re looking for. Consider this your ultimate guide to beating the heat and staying cool at outdoor events this spring and summer!

Dress for Success

First and foremost, dress appropriately for outdoor events. Opt for light-colored and loose-fitting clothing to keep cool in the heat. Avoid dark colors that absorb heat and make you feel hotter. Additionally, wearing a hat and sunglasses will help protect your face and eyes from the sun's blinding rays. (Sunscreen helps protect you, too, although as much as we wish it could, it won't make you feel any cooler.)

Quench Your Thirst

Another important tip for staying cool at outdoor events is to stay hydrated. Bring a water bottle with you if possible, and make sure to drink frequently during the event. Consider bringing a cooling device like a cooling towel that you can wet and wrap around your neck to stay cool in the heat. These towels can also be placed on your forehead or other pulse points to help lower your body temperature.

Appreciate Some AC

If you're attending an outdoor event that has air conditioning, take advantage of it! Step inside for a few minutes to cool down before heading back outside. Many indoor areas at outdoor events offer air-conditioned spaces, such as restrooms, food and drink areas, and merchandise tents.

Indulge in an Icy Treat

Another fantastic way to beat the heat is to indulge in a cool treat such as water ice or ice cream. Many spring and summer events have ice cream vendors or food trucks that offer cold treats to help keep you cool. If the venue allows outside food and beverages, you can also bring your own snack stash in a cooler to keep things cold and refreshing.

Your Biggest Fan

One way to stay cool at outdoor events that has gained popularity during the last few years is using a personal cooling device like a portable neck fan. These small fans are made to be worn around your neck and provide a consistent cool breeze to keep you comfortable. You can also bring a misting fan to create a cool mist that can help lower your body temperature.

A Word on Safety

Extreme heat isn’t just uncomfortable — it can be dangerous, so it's important to remember to stay safe any time you’re exposed to spring or summer heat for an extended period. If you begin to develop a headache or you feel dizzy or nauseous, take a break from the sun and seek shade or air conditioning. Don't push yourself to stay outside in the heat if you're not feeling well.
